Individuals Stopping Anti-Obesity Jabs Put On Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis suggests that individuals who stop using new slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight much more quickly than those who halt conventional diet and exercise programs.

Research printed in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while obese people frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Individuals using such drugs need to be aware of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery means a reversion to pre-treatment weight in about a year and a half.

Comparing Therapies

The study, which looked at 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

Researchers emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically experience a less rapid creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

The Reason for the Rapid Regain

Experts believe the way of the injections explains the amplified regain.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also reduce responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Withdrawal of this medication results in appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating a significant risk."

A Chronic Issue?

The NHS suggest the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals say that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment is often long-term.

This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "underscore the chronic nature of obesity," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.

Patient Experiences

Individuals who have come off the medication report a intense return of appetite.

"It was like a switch that goes on and you're instantly ravenous," described a patient.

This challenge is exacerbated if users have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Significant Adoption

Figures suggest that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.

  • Adoption is more common among females than males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Ultimately, clinicians caution that while the jabs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and maintained weight loss relies on integrated lifestyle management.
