EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official States

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US on five Europeans working on fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including the French president charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted individuals that were at the heart of efforts to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

The DSA is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders contend the regulations are essential to combat hate speech and disinformation.

This disagreement threatens to become part of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and European institutions.
